Day 1: Yellowknife, Canada

Welcome to Canada! Upon arrival at Yellowknife Airport, a local guide will meet the group and assist with the transfer to the hotel. Yellowknife, the capital city of the Northwest Territories, is an isolated mining town located on the north shore of Great Slave Lake, about 400 km from the Arctic Circle, and it’s also known as the one of the best places in the world to see the Northern Lights.

Overnight: The Explorer Hotel, Yellowknife

Day 2: Yellowknife City Tour, Aurora Viewing

Today you will be picked up at your hotel in the afternoon for your tour exploring the historically and culturally vibrant city of Yellowknife. Your guided tour reveals its early beginnings where the “streets were paved with gold”, to its deeply rooted Aboriginal culture. See the Legislative Assembly, Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Center, as well as a scenic drive through Downtown and Old Town. Tonight, depart with your guide to Aurora Village for your first Aurora viewing with a three course dining experience! Situated around the village on high ground and away from the lights of the city, the view of the Aurora is unsurpassed.

Overnight: The Explorer Hotel, Yellowknife

Day 3: Wildlife Experience, Aurora Viewing

After a midday pickup from your hotel, embark on a guided wildlife tour excursion. The wild landscape of the Northwest Territories is home to stunning views, lakes, rivers and amazing Wildlife. It is one of the last remaining places you will see Woodland Bison or ‘Buffalo’ roaming free in the wild. Also, you can spot various wildlife such as foxes, black bear, wolverines, bald eagles, sand cranes, and other rare animals that may show up along the way. Followed by another evening of Aurora viewing to cap off a perfect day.

Overnight: The Explorer Hotel, Yellowknife

Today is at leisure to explore the city independently until the evening departure of the final aurora viewing opportunity.

Day 5: Yellowknife – Calgary – Banff

Transfer from the hotel to Yellowknife airport for your flight to Calgary. Upon arrival at Calgary International Airport, meet and assist by a tour director and travel on the Trans-Canada Highway into the rolling foothills of the Rocky Mountains. The majestic peaks of the Canadian Rockies soon fill the horizon as we enter Banff National Park. Banff is the first and most famous of Canada’s national parks and is an incomparable combination of towering peaks and high meadows, emerald lakes and keen mountain air. These – and sulphur hot springs – have made Banff National Park one of North America’s most spectacular scenic and recreational areas.

In the shadow of the Great Divide, Yoho holds the secrets of ancient ocean life, the power of ice and water, and unique plant and animal communities that continue to evolve today. Overnight: Lake Louise Inn

Rocky Mountaineer Optional Upgrade: Lake Louise – Kamloops

Relax onboard the iconic Rocky Mountaineer for two days of all-daylight rail travel uniting Canada’s West and East. Your journey takes you through a spectacular array of scenery as you travel between the glacier and snow-capped peaks of the Canadian Rockies, over mountain passes and through remarkable tunnels, along rocky lakeshores and across the ranchlands of the interior. Today’s highlights include the Continental Divide, the Spiral Tunnels, the Kicking Horse Canyon, Rogers Pass and Craigellachie where the last spike of the Canadian Pacific Railway was driven. Your overnight hotel in Kamloops will be of a moderate standard and will be assigned close to departure.

Day 11: Sun Peaks – Vancouver

We can expect a day of dramatic scenery changes. Passing the “cowboy country” ranch land of Kamloops and follow the dramatic course of the Thompson and Fraser Rivers, the road clinging to sheer canyon walls with the turbulent waters rushing below. Approaching the Pacific Coast, the canyon opens into a broad fertile valley with mountain backdrops. Our destination is Vancouver, a vibrant seaside city and known as the “jewel” of North America’s Pacific Coast. It is situated in a magnificent setting among the sea, the beaches, the harbour and the steep Coast Mountains. Cosmopolitan with a small-town atmosphere, it has grown from a small mill town to a metropolis in less than a century. Guests on the train will also be arriving in Vancouver this evening.

Rocky Mountaineer Optional Upgrade: Kamloops – Vancouver

Reboard the Rocky Mountaineer this morning at Kamloops Station. On today’s journey west, you will again see dramatic changes in scenery, from the desert-like environment of the Interior, through winding river canyons and pristine forests, to the Coast and Cascade Mountains and the lush green fields of the Fraser Valley. Breakfast and lunch will be served onboard. Highlights include the steep slopes and rock sheds along the Thompson River and the rushing waters of Hell’s Gate in the Fraser Canyon.
